The stadium is a pioneer of green design, many of the innovations used in the design and procurement were pre-cursors to the "GreenStar" approach. It is still regarded as one of the most environmentally sustainable stadia in the world. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) wanted the Sydney Olympics to be the ‘Green Games’. Innovative environmentally sustainable measures that were introduced into the main stadium included recycling rainwater from the roof into underground storage tanks to irrigate the pitch and a range of passive design measures including ventilation and natural cooling/heating.

The Stadium was described by the Head of the IOC Samaranch as "The best stadium I have ever seen"

My role was as joint Architectural Director, working from concept design through the Build-Own-Operate-Transfer bid process and through to completion in 1999.
